Construction Cirque Firm Double Mattress
The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all the different materials at play here, I’m stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Cirque Firm Double Mattress
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft texture up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant relaxation.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will find three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The center of these three layers is especially essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at releasing heat, so the addition of those small ventilations promotes more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in regulating temperatures as the spaces between them allow for continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the bottom of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the entire mattress.
After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting light hand pressure to the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from the springs.
At this point I’d like to note that individuals of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my view on the overall firmness level of the mattress, I invited three other individuals to give their view too. This will give you a much better feeling of the firmness range you can expect from the mattress.
As you can find in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of the DreamCloud, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compared to the industry norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s clear that this mattress is pretty firm.
Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a good bed. While you’ll feel some small sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you from this mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
As opposed to just explaining the feel of this mattress for you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do so, I placed a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can find the results on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my back, my weight was equally dispersed throughout the mattress, therefore I did not feel like I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the bed and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. However, I still felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I believed the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and out of the mattress, which is key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to transition across these positions with comparative ease.
Motion Transfer Cirque Firm Double Mattress
If you intend on sharing your bed with a partner, you’ll want to find out what it will feel like when another person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of movement that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress from another. Cirque Firm Double Mattress
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great solution for couples.
When purchasing a new bed, the majority of people wish to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, weight and density are meant to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Cirque Firm Double Mattress
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re likely to experience some instant sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combination will interest a vast assortment of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers the most.
If you are going to share your mattress with a spouse and will need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, it is going to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it’ll give you.
I am especially interested to see whether the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring versions.
Laying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the bed as I did in the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a little compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the wrapped coil system beneath. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
