Construction Dream Cloud Mattress Issues
The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief. Dream Cloud Mattress Issues
Given all the distinct materials at play here, I am stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another.
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft texture up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will discover three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The middle of the three layers is especially essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at releasing heat, so the addition of these small ventilations promotes more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions into the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in moderating temperatures as the distances between them permit steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the base of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the entire mattress.
After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying light hand pressure to the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from these springs.
Now I want to note that people of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving only my opinion on the overall firmness level of the DreamCloud, I enlisted three additional people to present their opinion too. This will give you a much better sense of the firmness range you can expect from the bed.
As you can find in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of the mattress, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compare this to the industry norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s clear that this bed is pretty firm.
Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a solid mattress. While you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you out of this mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
As opposed to just explaining the feel of the DreamCloud to you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can see the outcomes on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my back, my weight was evenly dispersed throughout the mattress, so I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped lift me from the bed and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. However, I still felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I thought that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and from the mattress, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to transition across these positions with comparative ease.
Motion Transfer Dream Cloud Mattress Issues
If you plan on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you will want to know what it will feel like when the other individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of motion that’s detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. Dream Cloud Mattress Issues
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, making this an awesome option for couples.
When buying a new bed, the majority of men and women want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dream Cloud Mattress Issues
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re likely to experience some instant sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combination will interest a vast range of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers in particular.
If you’re going to share your mattress with a partner and will need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, it’s likely to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it will give you.
I’m particularly interested to see if the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.
Laying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the bed as I did in the middle. Going closer to the side, I felt a little compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the wrapped coil system below. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
