Construction Dream Cloud Pillow
The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief. Dream Cloud Pillow
Given all the different materials at play here, I am stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact with one another.
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft feel up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate relaxation.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The middle of these three layers is especially essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at releasing heat, so the inclusion of those tiny ventilations encourages more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions to the firmer support section of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent rebound and assist disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in moderating temperatures as the distances between them permit steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the bottom of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the entire mattress.
After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting light hand pressure to the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from the springs.
At this point I’d like to note that people of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving just my opinion on the overall firmness level of the mattress, I invited three other individuals to give their opinion as well. This will give you a better feeling of the firmness range you may see from the bed.
As you can find in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of this DreamCloud, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s apparent that this bed is really firm.
I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it is definitely a solid mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you out of this bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
As opposed to just explaining the feel of this DreamCloud to you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do so, I put a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can see the results on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my backside, my weight was equally distributed across the mattress, therefore I did not feel as though I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the bed and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. However, I felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I believed that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and out of the mattress, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to transition across these positions with comparative ease.
Motion Transfer Dream Cloud Pillow
If you intend on sharing your bed with a spouse, you will want to know what it’ll feel like when the other individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of motion that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. Dream Cloud Pillow
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome solution for couples.
While buying a new mattress, most people wish to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, weight and density are meant to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dream Cloud Pillow
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re likely to experience some instant sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combination will interest a vast range of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers the most.
If you are going to share your bed with a spouse and need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, it’s going to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it will provide.
I am particularly interested to see if the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.
Lying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did in the center. Going closer to the side, I felt a little compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the wrapped coil system below. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
