Construction Is Dreamcloud Too Firm
The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief. Is Dreamcloud Too Firm
Given all of the different materials at play here, I’m stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact with one another.
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft feel up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will discover three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The middle of the three layers is especially important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at releasing heat, so the addition of those small ventilations encourages even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions into the firmer support section of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent rebound and assist disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in moderating temperatures as the spaces between them permit steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the bottom of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the entire mattress.
After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying light hand pressure into the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from these springs.
Now I want to note that individuals of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my view on the general firmness level of the mattress, I enlisted three additional individuals to present their opinion too. This will give you a better feeling of the firmness range you can see from the bed.
As you can find in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of the mattress, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is clear that this mattress is really firm.
Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a good mattress. While you’ll feel some small sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you out of this mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Rather than simply explaining the feel of this mattress to you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do so, I placed a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can find the outcomes on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my back, my weight was equally dispersed throughout the mattress, so I did not feel as though I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the bed and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. But, I felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I thought that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and out of the bed, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to shift across these positions with relative ease.
Motion Transfer Is Dreamcloud Too Firm
If you intend on sharing your bed with a spouse, you will want to know what it will feel like if another individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of movement that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. Is Dreamcloud Too Firm
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome solution for couples.
While purchasing a new bed, the majority of men and women wish to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Is Dreamcloud Too Firm
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re likely to encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combination will appeal to a vast range of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.
If you are going to share your bed with a spouse and will need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, then it’s likely to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it will provide.
I am especially interested to determine if the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.
Laying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the bed as I did at the center. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a little compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Changing to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
