Construction Latex Hybrid Twin-Size Mattress
The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.
Given all of the distinct materials at play , I am stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Latex Hybrid Twin-Size Mattress
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft texture up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The middle of the three layers is particularly essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of these tiny ventilations promotes even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions to the firmer support section of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent bounce and help disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in regulating temperatures as the distances between them permit continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the base of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the whole mattress.
After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying mild hand pressure into the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.
At this point I want to let you know that people of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving just my view on the general firmness level of this DreamCloud, I invited three other individuals to give their opinion too. This will provide you with a better sense of the firmness range you can see from the bed.
As you can find in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of this mattress, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compared to the industry norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is apparent that this bed is really firm.
I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a good mattress. While you’ll feel some small sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you from the bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
Rather than just describing the feel of the mattress to you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do so, I placed a pressure map above the bed and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can see the outcomes on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my backside, my weight was evenly dispersed throughout the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the mattress and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. But, I still felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I believed the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and from the bed, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to transition across these positions with relative ease.
Motion Transfer Latex Hybrid Twin-Size Mattress
If you plan on sharing your bed with a spouse, you’ll want to know what it will feel like if another individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of motion that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress from another. Latex Hybrid Twin-Size Mattress
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, making this a great solution for couples.
While buying a new bed, most men and women want to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Latex Hybrid Twin-Size Mattress
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re going to experience some instant sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a wide assortment of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers in particular.
If you’re going to share your mattress with a partner and need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, then it’s likely to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it will give you.
I’m especially interested to see whether the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.
Laying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did at the middle. Going closer to the side, I felt a little compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the coil system below. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
