Construction Mattress Firm Twin Box Spring
The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.
Given all the different materials at play here, I’m stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Mattress Firm Twin Box Spring
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft texture up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The middle of these three layers is particularly essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of these small ventilations encourages even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions into the firmer support segment of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent rebound and assist disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in moderating temperature as the spaces between them permit steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the bottom of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the entire mattress.
After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting mild hand pressure into the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from these springs.
At this point I’d like to note that individuals of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my view on the general firmness level of this DreamCloud, I invited three additional individuals to present their view too. This will give you a better sense of the firmness range you may expect from the bed.
As you can see in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of this mattress, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compare this to the market standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is clear that this mattress is really firm.
I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it is definitely a good bed. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you from this mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
As opposed to simply describing the feel of this DreamCloud to you, I chose to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I placed a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can see the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my backside, my weight was equally distributed throughout the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. But, I still felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I thought the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and from the bed, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to shift across these positions with comparative ease.
Motion Transfer Mattress Firm Twin Box Spring
If you plan on sharing your bed with a partner, you will want to know what it will feel like when another person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of movement that’s detectable from one side of the mattress from the other. Mattress Firm Twin Box Spring
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, making this a great option for couples.
While purchasing a new mattress, most people wish to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, weight and density are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Mattress Firm Twin Box Spring
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re likely to encounter some immediate sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a wide range of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers the most.
If you’re going to share your mattress with a partner and will need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, it’s likely to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it will give you.
I am particularly interested to see if the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.
Laying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did in the center. Going closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the wrapped coil system beneath. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
