Construction New Firm Mattress
The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.
Given all of the different materials at play here, I am stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact together. New Firm Mattress
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft feel up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant relaxation.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The middle of the three layers is particularly important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at dissipating heat, so the addition of these small ventilations promotes more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support section of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent rebound and assist disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in moderating temperatures as the distances between them allow for steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the bottom of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the entire mattress.
After taking a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying mild hand pressure into the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.
At this point I’d like to note that individuals of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my view on the general firmness level of this DreamCloud, I invited three additional individuals to present their view as well. This will give you a better sense of the firmness range you can expect from the bed.
As you can see in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of this mattress, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compare this to the market norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s clear that this bed is really firm.
I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a good bed. While you’ll feel some small sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you from the bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
As opposed to simply explaining the feel of the mattress for you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map above the bed and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can see the outcomes on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my back, my weight was evenly distributed throughout the mattress, so I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the bed and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. But, I still felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I thought the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and out of the bed, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to shift across these positions with relative ease.
Motion Transfer New Firm Mattress
If you plan on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you’ll want to find out what it’ll feel like when the other individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of movement that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress to another. New Firm Mattress
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, making this an awesome solution for couples.
While purchasing a new bed, the majority of people want to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. New Firm Mattress
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re going to encounter some immediate sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a vast assortment of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers the most.
If you are going to share your mattress with a spouse and need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, then it’s going to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it will provide.
I am particularly interested to see if the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.
Laying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the bed as I did in the middle. Going closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the coil system below. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
